Renovation of Wil Courtyard

Intelligent lighting in an 800-year-old cultural asset

Listed architecture meets modern automation

The Hof zu Wil is considered one of Switzerland's most important cultural assets. The building ensemble, which is over 800 years old, is under federal protection and combines historical architecture with a variety of uses - from museum and library to gastronomy, hotels and event rooms.
As part of the comprehensive refurbishment, the entire lighting infrastructure was renewed and equipped with TWILINE building automation - Swiss Made.
The result: a future-proof, energy-efficient lighting control system in line with the requirements of monument preservation.

🛠 Measures implemented

The modernization included all parts of the building and areas of use:

  • Fürstensaal & Ulrich-Rösch-Saal

  • City library & museum

  • Hotel, chapel & abbot's room

  • Economy, kitchens & business rooms

  • Tower quarter, brewery & outdoor areas

In all areas, the lighting control was fully automated and integrated into the central TWILINE architecture.

💡 Intelligent lighting control - precise and energy-efficient

The new lighting technology combines convenience, efficiency and protection of the historic building fabric.
TWILINE enables flexible control, automatic light regulation and transparent monitoring of all operating parameters.

Functional highlights:

  • Automatic brightness control combined with presence and opening logic

  • Constant light levels thanks to individually parameterizable setpoints

  • Exterior lighting controlled via twilight sensor and timer

  • Ramp functions and run-on times for smooth transitions

  • Voltage and fuse monitoring with forwarding to the control system

⚙️ Technical infrastructure - precisely networked

The building automation system has a modular structure and is deeply integrated into the existing system landscape.

Key technical data:

  • 9 TWILINE central web servers

  • Over 2,000 networked data points

  • Hundreds of DALI ballasts

  • Seamless integration into existing control and visualization systems

This infrastructure ensures high operational reliability, simple maintenance and maximum scalability.

🌿 Result - efficiency in harmony with history

With TWILINE, a solution was created that respects the historical substance while using state-of-the-art technology.
The lighting control system reacts automatically to usage, daylight and opening hours - efficiently, with low maintenance and in keeping with the listed building.

The result:

  • Energy-efficient and flexible lighting control

  • Preservation of the architectural character through targeted lighting design

  • Transparent monitoring of all lighting and energy parameters

  • Future-proof automation for a major historical building
